Travel Photographers, Don’t Sell Yourself Cheap

I know how it feels to get published. I think for an aspiring photographer, it is one of the initial accomplishments to see their photos on print with their name on it. With photography very accessible to everyone lately, it’s so easy to get into the field. But wait! It is also a hive for some publishers and companies to take advantage of young and aspiring photographers wanting to break into the field. “Give us your photos for free and credit you for that”, they say. That’s just cheap.

Backpack Photography Batanes June 2010 from Ferdz Decena on Vimeo.

Backpack Photography Batanes Travel and Outdoors Workshop has just ended. Here are video highlights of the Workshop held last June 24-27, 2010. It was 4 days and nights of waking up before the sun, humidity and power outages. But the refreshing views, great weather through out and the company of enthusiastic group of photographers with sunny and cheerful air made it all worthwhile.

Big thanks to Canon for lending the Selphy Printer and a prize, a couple more prizes from Eagle Creek, Olympus for providing each of us Caps to use under the heat and Sony for lending the bloggie.

All videos were taken with the Olympus E-PL1

Veranda View at Peacock Garden Resort

View from my room veranda at Peacock Garden Resort in Bohol (Olympus E-PL1, Zuiko 9-18mm)

Third time’s a charm as they say! In a span of a month I’ve been to Bohol for the third time. I just came home from a magazine photo assignment which I may say is so far the most physically challenging and also life-risky shoots I’ve done. It’s all about adventure I say and it was hell lot of fun. As much as I liked to do a daily dispatch, I can’t divulge much detail until the issue is out.

Hands On: Canon PowerShot S90

The Canon PowerShot S90

The Canon PowerShot S90

Small is the next big thing when it comes to digital cameras nowadays. When Panasonic made a hit with their advance compact LUMIX LX3, camera manufacturers saw the demand for a small pocketable camera boasting high image quality. Canon a few months ago revived their PowerShot S-line when they released their top of the line compact G11. Sporting a similar sensor and Digic processor as the G11, the new Canon PowerShot S90 is smaller and more compact. I was able to take this camera on a test drive when I went for a two vacation and here’s my long overdue quick hands-on impression on the S90.

Field Test Review: Sony Alpha A550

Odos Ongkoy, South Cotabato (Sony A550, f 5.6, 1/1250, ISO 200, 18mm, out-of-camera)

Before the on-set of the holidays late last year. I introduced the Sony Alpha A550 with Sony DT DT 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 SAM here. And after about three weeks with the camera, here is my express field review of this DSLR. Three weeks is actually a short time to really get to know a camera. Some people can run the entire lab test they want but it is different with actual usage and application of the camera in the field. I wasn’t able to fully utilize all the camera features here because of the short time and also of the holidays but I think I covered the important aspects of the camera below. Note that most images here are out-of-camera JPGs (OOC) with only resizing and watermark done on the images.

Ushering 2010 with Blue Moons

The Full Moon on a New Year 2010 (Taken 12:22am Phil Time)

The Full Moon on a New Year 2010

Yes it comes only every 2 decades. And we get to see it this time again on the New Years Eve of 2009. No don’t expect the moon to be fully blue in color but it’s just a term for a double full moon in one month which happens rarely hence the term “Once in a blue moon” while technically here in the Philippines it starts at 3:15am January 1st so it wouldn’t be a blue moon on 2009 but on 2010. In fact 2010 would be a rare lunar year with having multiple blue moons here in the Philippines, which is January 1, and 30 and March 1 and 30.
