Environmental Portraits and Feature: Tomas Leonor of Step Juan

Tomas Leonor of Step Juan

Tomas Leonor of Step Juan (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, f1.7, 1/30sec, ISO 200, Pin Hole Art Filter)

Challenged on how he can help a group of 60 children with cancer on a visit in Batangas, he did what little he could do – walk. Artist-Environmentalist, Tomas Leonor, has very little in possession so last year he decided to walk to generate awareness and funds for children with cancer. From Pagudpud, he walked about 475.5km to Matnog, Sorsogon in a period of 48days with only his rickshaw Karl (inspired by walking adventurer Karl Bushby) as companion.

For this year, 2011, Tomas will continue his walk in the Visayas region for Step Juan Bai, a 56 day journey picking up from where he left off at Allen Bicol to Boracay Aklan starting April 4, 2011.

This afternoon, I caught up with Tomas after his Presscon at Philippine Children’s Medical Center and had an informal chat about his Step Juan Bai project.

Environmental Portraits: Civet Coffee Bean Gatherer

Lucinda

Lucinda the Civet Coffee Gatherer (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, f1.7, 1/250, ISO 400)

This is Lucinda, a Civet Coffee Bean gatherer in Talisay, Batangas. Every morning, for half a year, she and her husband would wake up before the sun rises and traverse three mountains, including Mt Malarayat in Batangas to find the precious fecal remains of the Civet Cat. These cat poop are then processed to become the world’s most expensive coffee, the Alamid Coffee. Here, Lucinda shows a four hours old cat poop with coffee beans in the forest of Mt Malarayat.

Environmental Portraits: To Look or Not to Look?

Old Panutsa Lady

Old Panutsa Lady (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, F1.7, 1/25sec, ISO 400)

They say they eyes is the most important aspect of a portrait. It has to be clear to show the expression of the person in the picture. But the question is, does it always have to look straight at you? There are times the eye contact can mesmerize you but looking away can also paint another story. Here’s a photo of an old lady from a Patupat Factory in Pangasinan organizing a pile of panutsa (sweet brown sugarcane delicacy). Shot with the Olympus E-PL1 with the 20mm f1.7 Pancake lens just a few minutes apart, one photo is looking at the camera and the other one is looking far away. Which do you prefer?

Environmental Portraits: What’s so Funny?

Nina and Izah Laugh

Nina and Izah Laugh (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, f1.8, ISO 800, 1/400sec)

Here’s to continue with my Environmental Portraits Project using the Lumix 20mm f1.7 Pancake with the Olympus E-PL1. Can I just say I’m loving this pancake lens more and more? Now on this photo, I just love the character of this photo, especially on Nina and Izah’s smirky expression. it makes you just want to go behind them and see what’s behind that evil-looking iPod. Which I did after taking this photo and I won’t tell. As you can see from the setting, the ISO is 800, I would have preffered it to be lower but I just got out from the lowlight interiors of a church and I had no time to change lest I miss this shot.

Chinese New Year’s Eve

Chinese New Year Ang Pao

Chinese Ang Pao (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, f1.7, ISO 200)

There’s a big lull on my entries from the last one. Well I’m hoping to make up for at least 1 entry per week if I can. There’s a bunch of 20mm environmental portraits to feature here and some articles I’ve writter on photography before. For the meantime it’s the Chinese New Year’s Eve. here’s the traditional Ang Pao or Chinese Red Envelope that symbolize good luck and to ward off evil. Wishing everyone a blessed Year of the Metal Rabbit ahead.

Who doesn’t love theme parks? Growing up, I enjoyed visiting these places especially at this time of the year. It’s always a fun place to be in. Here in the Philippines, Enchanted Kingdom remains to be the premiere theme park. It’s almost 2 years since my last visit and have noticed they have spruced up a bit with a new ride and few new attractions.

RockED Rock the Riles 2010

Step into Switch

Step into the music of Switch (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, 1/50, f1.7, ISO 100)

It was one of those rare times where people can linger around MRT stations and bring their cameras out to take some pictures. It was also one afternoon for me where I get to do some station hopping just to see what bands were playing. Last Sunday, December 12, was Rock the Riles 2010 brought to you by RockED. It’s an annual event held every Sunday of December near the Human Rights Day.
