Environmental Portraits: Photographers Infront

Allan

Allan (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, f1.7, ISO 200, 1/800sec)

We’re always behind our camera that’s why photographers are seldom seen on our pictures. We can be so absorbed during shoots but while walking on a bird hide path at Candaba Bird Sanctuary in Pampanga, that corridor of bamboo walls was just too scenic not to ignore. So with my Olympus PEN E-PL1 along with the Lumix 20mm f1.7 I thought of taking environmental portraits of a couple of my photographer friends with me.

Johnoy Danao Rocks the Riles at Boni

Johnoy Danao performs for Rock the Riles at MRT Boni

Johnny Danao at MRT Boni (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, 1/80sec, f1.7, ISO 800, +0.7, WB Shade)

His body sways back and forth to the rhythm of his strums as if in trance, he enters to the groove of his music. Johnoy Danao is a new face and voice for me in music. And from his solo acoustic performance of his original Ulan to his rendition of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song, I was already taken by his music and the clarity of his voice. An artist to watch out for much in line with the likes of Noel Cabangon and Cythia Alexander. I’m glad I waited for him to perform.

Wide eyed Alexa (E-PL1, 20mm, 1/30sec, f1.7, ISO 800)

Normally, Portrait Photography shows the dominance of the subject’s face on the frame. It aims to show the subject’s character facial features and expression. Ideally, portraits are shot with a lens at least 85mm (on a 35mm equivalent) long on wide apertures at least f2.8 to flatten out the perspective and separate the subject from the background with at least beautiful enough bokeh (or background blur).

Imogen Heap and Thomas Ermacora

Imogen Heap and Thomas Ermacora

Imogen Heap is one of my favorite female musicians. First time I’ve heard her ethereal voice is on the collaborative duo Frou Frou. I looked her up and found out she had great solo albums and since then, her music has been a constant companion in my travels. I was ecstatic to learn she was co-working (with Thomas Ermacora) on a concept nature film, Love The Earth and are asking people for contributions.

Silverkris Makati Art in the City

Silverkris Makati Art in the City Opening Spread

It’s a great experience to have worked again with a different international inflight publication this time just to see their work process. Asked what cosmopolitan city we can easily feature aside from Manila, we pitched the idea of Makati and its ever growing creative spots. It’s a bit of challenge to shoot around Makati since it’s one of the most unfriendly places for photographers, but we managed to pull it off. If you’re flying anytime this month via Singapore Airlines, don’t forget to check out the SilverKris Inflight Magazine and the feature story on Makati, “Art in the City”.

Coffee Origins Exhibit at Greenbelt 5

Coffee lovers have a reason to troop to Greenbelt 5, Ayala until next week. The Coffee Origins Exhibit is running at the Gallery Bridge at the 2nd level. I’m not really a coffee enthusiast but it’s a project I’m involved with like last year as the creative guys behind the booth designs used my photos from Lake Sebu, Bacolod and Iloilo on their booth. Check it out.
