Environmental Portraits: Corregidor Tour Guide

Mang Pol Curato

Mang Pol Curato (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, f1.8, 1/1250sec, ISO 200, )

His name is Pol Curato, we simply call him Mang Pol. He was our guide from our recent tour in Corregidor Island. He’s been guiding here for about 3 decades now, a heritage himself yet still witty in his lectures and trivia.

Here he raises an illustration of some victorious Japanese along with the gun at Battery Hearn, where we were at that time.

Backpack Photography will be having a Photo Tour in Corregidor. Join us on July 2-3, 2011 as we show you how to Capture Corregidor in a New Light.

Environmental Portraits: Mirrored Innocence

Ifugao Girl

Ifugao Girl Mirrored Innocence (Olympus E-PL2, Lumix 20mm, F1.7, 1/30sec, ISO 1600)

It’s been a while since I traveled on my own. I went to Banaue recently to try to catch the Imbayah Festival and also to arrange things for our upcoming Backpack Photography Banaue Photo Adventure this May 13-15. It’s really hard to work on the logistics of far-off places like Batad and Bangaan so I have to go there personally. I took the Ohayami Bus, an alternative to Flordia,  for the first time. Aside from it also being a freezer yet equally comfortable, it was a tad slower and I noticed that most of the passengers are Ifugao since the bus line is owned by one.

Environmental Portraits and Feature: Tomas Leonor of Step Juan

Tomas Leonor of Step Juan

Tomas Leonor of Step Juan (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, f1.7, 1/30sec, ISO 200, Pin Hole Art Filter)

Challenged on how he can help a group of 60 children with cancer on a visit in Batangas, he did what little he could do – walk. Artist-Environmentalist, Tomas Leonor, has very little in possession so last year he decided to walk to generate awareness and funds for children with cancer. From Pagudpud, he walked about 475.5km to Matnog, Sorsogon in a period of 48days with only his rickshaw Karl (inspired by walking adventurer Karl Bushby) as companion.

For this year, 2011, Tomas will continue his walk in the Visayas region for Step Juan Bai, a 56 day journey picking up from where he left off at Allen Bicol to Boracay Aklan starting April 4, 2011.

This afternoon, I caught up with Tomas after his Presscon at Philippine Children’s Medical Center and had an informal chat about his Step Juan Bai project.

Environmental Portraits: Civet Coffee Bean Gatherer

Lucinda

Lucinda the Civet Coffee Gatherer (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, f1.7, 1/250, ISO 400)

This is Lucinda, a Civet Coffee Bean gatherer in Talisay, Batangas. Every morning, for half a year, she and her husband would wake up before the sun rises and traverse three mountains, including Mt Malarayat in Batangas to find the precious fecal remains of the Civet Cat. These cat poop are then processed to become the world’s most expensive coffee, the Alamid Coffee. Here, Lucinda shows a four hours old cat poop with coffee beans in the forest of Mt Malarayat.

Environmental Portraits: Photographers Infront

Allan

Allan (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, f1.7, ISO 200, 1/800sec)

We’re always behind our camera that’s why photographers are seldom seen on our pictures. We can be so absorbed during shoots but while walking on a bird hide path at Candaba Bird Sanctuary in Pampanga, that corridor of bamboo walls was just too scenic not to ignore. So with my Olympus PEN E-PL1 along with the Lumix 20mm f1.7 I thought of taking environmental portraits of a couple of my photographer friends with me.

Johnoy Danao Rocks the Riles at Boni

Johnoy Danao performs for Rock the Riles at MRT Boni

Johnny Danao at MRT Boni (Olympus E-PL1, Lumix 20mm, 1/80sec, f1.7, ISO 800, +0.7, WB Shade)

His body sways back and forth to the rhythm of his strums as if in trance, he enters to the groove of his music. Johnoy Danao is a new face and voice for me in music. And from his solo acoustic performance of his original Ulan to his rendition of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song, I was already taken by his music and the clarity of his voice. An artist to watch out for much in line with the likes of Noel Cabangon and Cythia Alexander. I’m glad I waited for him to perform.

Environmental Portraits Project

Wide eyed Alexa

Wide eyed Alexa (E-PL1, 20mm, 1/30sec, f1.7, ISO 800)

Normally, Portrait Photography shows the dominance of the subject’s face on the frame. It aims to show the subject’s character facial features and expression. Ideally, portraits are shot with a lens at least 85mm (on a 35mm equivalent) long on wide apertures at least f2.8 to flatten out the perspective and separate the subject from the background with at least beautiful enough bokeh (or background blur).
