Olympus PEN E-PL2 Field Test: The Beefed Up E-PL1

Olympus PEN E-PL2 now in the Philippines

Now on its 4th PEN, Olympus displayed evolution on this new M43rds model. The Olympus PEN E-PL2 is their most recent release which is by naming convention is a successor to their E-PL1 which proved successful at launch. As a user of the Olympus PEN E-PL1 for more than a year now, E-PL2 is more like a beefed up version of the E-PL1. It has the same sensor with a few tweaks so Image Quality is more or less the same. What significantly changed is the body. So here are a few things I liked from the new E-PL2. Also you can see a few hi-resolution out-of-the-camera real-world sample shots which you can access at my flickr account.

Olympus E-5 Express Field Test: It’s the E-3 With Some Spunk

The Olympus E-5 DSLR

The Olympus E-5 DSLR

It took about three years before Olympus finally rolled out their upgrade for their flagship Olympus E-3. Just when everybody thought they would be abandoning their DSLRs to focus on their PEN Micro Four Thirds Line, they produced the Olympus E-5 to somehow show their commitment to the classic Four Thirds Format. But would this be enough to keep the current Four Thirds users from switching or new DSLR buyers to consider this as their purchase? Here are my impressions of the Olympus E-5 DSLR from a couple of weeks use.

Olympus E-5 field tested at Nagsasa, Zambales

So I let my little powerhouse Olympus PEN E-PL1 take a rest and take the new Olympus E-5 DSLR out into the wild. It was a fun weekend trip to Nagsasa in San Antonio Zambales and I get to expose this camera to the elements. And all I can say for now is that if you are looking for one rugged DSLR camera that can withstand the outdoors, this one’s it.

Last October, Olympus finally released the Micro Four Thirds (m43) version of their mid-range telephoto 40-150mm (80-300mm equivalent) lens. On the regular Four Thirds (43), Olympus usually pairs this lens with the regular 14-42mm as a dual lens kit. It took some time for them to release this version after 3 m43 bodies, the only option before was the regular four thirds 40-150mm with the MMF-2 adapter included on a dual zoom kit. But I had a problem with this set up as the lens is slow to focus on the m43rds bodies for me so I decided to get the m43 version instead and see if it will perform better.

Field Test: Organize with Design Go’s Travel Wallet

Design Go Travel Wallet in Hong Kong

Design Go Travel Wallet in Hong Kong

I just got back from Hong Kong. It was my first time there and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Along with me, I took along Design Go’s Travel Wallet which I complimentary got from Primer. I’m not really an organizer-kind of guy and would just keep my documents in zip locks so it was also my first time to try out using an organizer on a trip.

Nokia N8 USB On-the-Go

Nokia N8 USB On-the-Go Field Test

I’m always trying to find ways to travel lighter, especially with all my gadgets in tow. My current setup is bringing along my netbook for my daily obsessive-compulsive image back-up whenever I’m on a trip. I was ecstatic to learn that Nokia’s new flagship model, the Nokia N8, has the USB OTG (On-the-Go) capability, making the handset a useful portable drive as well. So I put the feature to the test to see if I can possibly leave my netbook on my upcoming travels.

Field Review: Olympus PEN E-PL1

Olympus E-PL1 with Leather Case

Olympus E-PL1 with Leather Case

Since the release of the New Generation Interchangeable Lens Cameras, whenever people ask me what’s a good SLR to buy, I always suggest the alternative system like the Olympus PEN. For one it’s lighter but still has the DSLR image quality. It’s also less daunting than the advance digital SLRs on the market for those moving from compact point and shoot. The Olympus PEN E-PL1 is the third Micro Four Thirds PEN camera from Olympus introduced last March. It hopes to appeal to consumers with its low price tag and user-friendly interface. I’ve been using the Olympus E-PL1 for almost 6 months now and here’s a somewhat quick review of the camera.
